Woolworths Karrinyup Pipework Replacement

Woolworths Karrinyup is one of the major grocery retailers located with the recently refurbished Karrinyup Shopping Centre.

Firesafe were awarded the contract with Dakina Constructions to remove and replace the Fire Sprinkler system including pipework, mains, ranges, sprinkler heads and primary droppers as well as replacing the existing Woolworths Sprinkler Valve set with a new valve set. This work was required as the pipe has reached its life expectancy.

Within our scope, we were tasked with the design and installation of:

  • A compliant Fire Sprinkler system in accordance with AS2118.1 – 2017

Demolition works were required to remove the range mains, low level pipework feeding the cool rooms and existing high level sprinkler pipe work. New sprinklers were installed in the ceiling spaces, dry drop sprinklers were also installed to the chillers and freezers and new high hazard sprinkler protection was installed within the rear Loading Dock and Back of House areas.

As part of our scope, we removed the mains from the valve room and relocated the mains to the roof area.

All Non-Woolworths tenant feed mains located within Woolworth’s or travelling through the Woolworth’s store ceiling spaces required relocation to the roof for re routing. We also re-routed the mains to the roof of the tenancy building Firesafe also completed the fire rated penetrations in the areas.

Throughout the works, a majority of the fire sprinkler system remained live, areas that we worked on were isolated until that area of works was completed. Areas that were isolated overnight had additional fire extinguishers on mobile stands available for added protection. The fire hydrant, hose reel, detection and EWIS systems remained operational at all times.

Throughout the project we were faced with various challenges:

  • Works had to be completed outside of the store trading hours, our works were scheduled to take place between 8pm and 6am.
  • A majority of the fire sprinkler system remained live at all times; areas that were worked on were isolated to minimise disruption to other trade works
  • Store access and deliveries to loading docks, posed several logistic issues with the installation.
  • Due to the store remaining operational throughout the works, we had to ensure we communicated continually with other trades and the store/shopping centre management regarding our works and any disruptions by providing weekly reports.
