Narrogin Health

Narrogin Health Service is located within the Southern Wheatbelt of WA and forms part of the WA Government’s Southern Inland Health Initiative. The redevelopment comprises a new 34-bed inpatient unit, plus redevelopment of existing service buildings. The redevelopment works were broken into 12 seperable portions and the facility remained operational whilst the works were carried out.

Firesafe Inground were awarded the contract to install & upgrade Fire Hydrants & Hose Reels along with the installation of new Fire Pumps and Fire Water Storage tanks. Works also included a new Hydrant Booster Assembly complete with cabinet and back flow prevention device.

Within our scope, Firesafe Inground were tasked with the design and construct contract for the upgrade of the Fire Hydrant & Fire Hose Reel system of:

  • Fully compliant Fire Hydrant system upgrade in accordance with AS2419-2005
  • Fire Hose Reels in accordance with AS2441-2005
  • Fire Pumps in accordance with AS2941
  • Fire Water Storage Tanks in accordance with AS2304

The fire hydrants installed throughout the site were above ground and supplied coverage to all areas. The fire brigade booster connection provided the Fire Brigade connection to the hydrant ring main and consists of connections from the town’s main water supply to suit boosting flow rates in meet DFES requirements.

New fire pumps consisting of 1 x Electric duty pump and 1 x Diesel standby pump were installed to provide the required flow and pressure on the system. Each pump is controlled by its own pressure switch arrangement located on the pump sets skid.

There is a fire water storage tank located next to the pump shed which is filled via an infill line fed by the town’s main water supply from the street connection on Williams Road.

Fire Hose Reels have been installed in the building and are connected to the fire hydrant ring main.

Throughout the project we were faced with various challenges:

  • The Health Service facility remained operational throughout the redevelopment works, therefore Firesafe had to be mindful that careful management of the works program was always adhered to allow the Health Service to function with minimum disruption.
  • Due to the site being regional we had to plan our site labour and install material requirements in advance to ensure project timetables were meet for each separable portion. Employees were required to stay within the town whilst works were in progress, therefore accommodation had to be secured in advance due to demand by other contractors working on this project.
  • Thirdly, we were required to liaise with Government Departments – The Water Corporation for the provision of a new DN150mm fire main to the site through a DCV (Double Check Valve). We were able to liaise with the relevant Departments professionally to ensure all paperwork was submitted on time for project handover.
