Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre

Lakeside Joondalup Shopping Centre is currently Perth’s largest shopping destination situated 25km north of Perth CBD. As part of the redevelopment it included the first H&M and Aldi stores in Perth joining major retailers Myers, Kmart, Big W, Coles, Woolworths, IGA and approximately 320 existing and new speciality shops, cinemas, two food courts and many outdoor dining areas. The total area of the shopping complex covers 96,000 square metres.

Within our scope for this project we were tasked with the design and construct contract for all the Wet Fire services and Fire Detection services which included:

  • A fully compliant Fire Sprinkler system with combined water supply in accordance with AS2118.1
  • Duplex Fire Pumps in accordance with AS2419
  • Inground Fire Water Storage Tanks in accordance with AS2301
  • Fire Extinguishers in accordance with AS2444
  • A fully compliant Fire Detection system to AS1668.1 and Emergency Warning Intercommunication system to AS1670.4

Throughout the project there were various challenges which we had to overcome:

  • Firstly, the shopping centre was fully functional throughout the redevelopment, therefore the fire protection systems had to be alive. Firesafe ensured we had a good communication and working relationship with Centre Management to co-ordinate drain downs, isolations and reinstating of FIP and EWIS panels during out of hours or early works.
  • At the construction stage of changing out the existing pumps with new pump sets, we had to ensure the new pumps were fully built and commissioned prior to the changeover/installation. Firesafe were able to achieve this with minimum downtime and disruption.
  • The redevelopment of the shopping centre was broken into seven Separable Portions with each stage having its own project timetable for handover. To ensure portions were completed in readiness for handover within the designation time frame, Firesafe had to work closely with other contractors and trades as well as Centre Management at all times.
