Koodaideri Switch Rooms

The Koodaideri Iron Ore mine is an open-cut site located in the Pilbara region, 240km from Newman and will become one of the biggest iron ore mines in the region. The mine is estimated to create 2,000 construction jobs and 600 operational jobs and will have a throughput rate of 70Mtpa which fully operational.

Within our scope, we were tasked with the supply, design and installation of

  • Ampac FireFinder Plus panels compliant with AS7240 and AS1670
  • VESDA Multi Aspirated Smoke Detection Systems
  • Optical Smoke Detection with Visual Alarm Devices
  • FM200 Gaseous Fire Extinguishing systems compliant with AS4214-2018

Firesafe installed a total of 26 VESDA’s for this project.

Each area is fitted with both point type and aspirated smoke detection. The Detection system is installed to the room and also the underfloor. The FIP or Fire Detection Control Indicating Equipment (FDCIE) has been installed in a Substation Air Lock to provide control and indication of the Detection system. It is configured to interface with the Gas Suppression system as well as the existing site FIP over the fibre network.

The VESDA systems to the Switch Room and Comms Room senses smoke and send and alert to the FIP which displays visual status of the alarms.

The Gas Release is operated by 2 x Smoke Detectors being activated (double knock activation).

Throughout the project we were faced with various challenges but were overcome by good planning, quality installations and good communications with the client and RTIO.

Some of these challenges were:

  • Design changes through the length of the project due to the introduction of new RTIO specifications as well as general layout changes
  • Working closely with various clients, subcontractors and stakeholders, many which operate from remote locations
  • High level of witness testing to ensure stakeholder were 100% satisfied with the end product
  • Tight delivery times for completion of works.

All up the project was delivered on time and on budget. The clients and stakeholders were very pleased with the end result provided by Firesafe
