Fiona Stanley Building D&R

The $2 billion Fiona Stanley Hospital is the largest building infrastructure project ever undertaken
by the State.

  • Equivalent of four city blocks
  • 150,000sqm of floor space over five main buildings
  • 6,300 rooms
  • 783 beds, including 140 rehabilitation beds
  • State-of-the-art technology into every level of the hospital
  • More than five hectares of natural bushland, landscaped parks, internal gardens, courtyards and plazas
  • 3,600 basement, ground level and multi-storey car parking bays

When it opened in 2014, Fiona Stanley Hospital in Murdoch became Western Australia’s flagship health facility. It is the major tertiary hospital in the south metropolitan area and offers health care services to communities south of Perth and across the State.

Our project included the installation of a Fire Protection System consisting of Fire Sprinkler System, Fire Hydrant System, Gas Suppression Systems and Fire Detection & Alarm System to Buildings R (Rehabilitation Unit) and D (Mental health Unit)

  • A fully compliant combined fire system to the AS2118 series of standards
  • A fully compliant Fire Hose Reel system to AS2441
  • Compliant portable extinguishers to AS2444
  • A fully compliant Fire Detection system to AS1670.1 and Emergency Warning Intercommunication system to AS1670.4

Throughout these projects there were various challenges which we had to overcome:

  • This project required excessive amount of coordination between multiple trades over the entire site to ensure the correct communications and operation of multiple systems communicate simultaneously together.
  • The project involved new standards and processes that Firesafe had to implement e.g penetration processes and documentation, shared sprinkler and hydrant services, updated DFES requirements.
