Elizabeth Quay Busport

Elizabeth Quay Busport was formally known as the Esplanade Busport and is located at the Sourthern edge of the Perth CBD, next to the Perth Convention Exhibition Centre and Elizabeth Quay Train Station. It has 35 stands and is served by 55 Transperth routes operated by Path Transit, Swan Transit and Transdev WA. Passenger entrances are at the North and South ends of the upper level concourse and there are also several pedestrian bridges that connect the bus station to buildings north of Mounts Bay Road.

Within our scope, we were tasked with the design and construct contract for the Fire Hydrant Service Upgrade for the project on behalf of the Public Transport Authority:

  • A fully compliant Fire Hydrant system to AS2419 (All areas)

The system was required to provide full coverage to all areas of the entire existing Busport and the Level 1 concourse including new booster arrangement and town’s main water supply. This was required as the existing hydrant system was ineffective and non-compliant.

Throughout the project we were faced with various challenges:

  • Firstly, the Busport remained fully operational whilst our works were undertaken, therefore our project needed to be programmed to ensure minimal inconvenience and disturbance to the day to day operations of the facility throughout the duration of the contract. We overcame this by scheduling works after hours.
  • Secondly, we were required to liaise with Ernst & Young and the Adina Hotel as they are both located halfway above the Elizabeth Quay Busport. The programming and co-ordination was quite complex, as we were only allowed to use power tools between the hours of 5pm and 8am for the Ernst & Young side of the Busport and 8am and 8pm for the Adina Hotel side. We overcame this situation by having respectful and conscientious tradesman onsite ensuring they adhered to these restrictions at all times. Also our Project Manager utilised effective programming coordination to achieve the install without any complaints from either party.
  • Thirdly, we were required to liaise with various Government Departments – Water Corporation, DFES and the City of Perth for the provision of a new DN150mm fire main to the site. We were able to liaise with each of these Departments professionally to ensure all paperwork was submitted and site coordination was planned effectively.
